Pride and Prejudice: A Play.

SKU: 17523

According to Devoney Looser's book The Making of Jane Austen, this four-act play is the first full-length theatrical version of P&P  to be published. Mrs. Steele MacKay (aka Mary Keith Medbery) was married to a famous playwright and theatrical inventor. He has his own wikipedia page, but his wife does not. That's OK,; thanks to Devoney's book we know that this Elizabeth-centric play was performed widely in colleges and schools in the US and also we know that often, the 10 women and 10 men characters were all or mostly played by women. This lovely piece of history has an Elizabeth illustration pasted on the front cover and a color illustration of Darcy and Elizabeth in a drawing room on a frontispiece plate. Green cloth with embossed title. A previous owner marked a few of Elizabeth's  lines toward the end of the book with very light pencil. Previous owner penciled name and address in first free endpaper. A few marks on the back cover. Otherwise this is a very good clean copy. Duffield and Company. New York. Hb, no jacket. 1906.
