English. Volume XXV. Number 121. Spring 1976.
This volume of the journal English, published by the Oxford University Press for the English Association, timed right after the 100th anniversary of Austen's birth, includes Kenneth Graham's review of three books together in an essay titled "Anti-Jacobins and Janeites." He covers Marilyn Butler's Jane Austen and the War of Ideas, D. D. Devlin's Jane Austen and Education, and Douglas Bush's Jane Austen. Graham's review of Butler's War of Ideas is so in harmony with our own reactions on first reading that we recommend it to others who found themselves protesting "...but wait..." throughout the treatment of Austen's novels. If, on the other hand, you are absolutely convinced by all of Butler's arguments and dismissals of large portions of Austen's works, by all means avoid this essay. Discoloration of the front cover. 1976. Paper. USED. $10.00
