The Novels of Jane Austen and Jane Austen's Letters Large Paper Edition.

SKU: 90777

Gilson E150. Large Paper Edition of the Novels, with the Letters that were printed later in the same style. Novels limited to 1000 copies, of which 950 were offered for sale. "With Notes Indexes and Illustrations From Contemporary Sources." R. W. Chapman based the text on collations of all the editions published during Austen's lifetime. Illustrations are contemporary to the time period and include features such as a Repton color drawing with a fold-out flap showing an estate "before and after," a fold-out map of London in 1809 (wrongly dated 1819 in the list of illustrations), and several fashion plates and plates of locations. The Letters includes a fold-out facsimile. Quarter blue-grey cloth, marbled blue and white paper, with paper labels. Novels spines are more sun-darkened than the letters. Pages are perfectly clean with no marks other than a prevous owner name penciled on the NA/P volume and Vol 1 of the letters. Binding is tight. Edges, especially bottom edges, and some corners are worn. Overall a lovely set of this historic achievement of Chapman (and his wife - see Gilson on Vol 2 of P&P for example). 1923 (novels) and 1934 (letters). No dust jackets. Oxford at the Clarendon Press.
