Jones evaluates the novels of 18th and 19th century England to explore the relationship between married love, classic liberal thought, and novelistic form. During this period, consensual marriage become increasingly popular and the liberal idea of personal choice, for women as well as men, became more accepted. Women's place in society was reevaluated, and this change in thought was played out in novels. Looks closely at Richardson's Sir Charles Grandison, Austen's Persuasion, Trollope's He Knew He Was Right, Margaret Oliphant, and many other writers and novels of the period.
