Stein tackles the interesting question of the birth of the Anglophile novel from a different angle - rather than looking at the cultural context, he's focusing on the material context of books, how books were made and distributed, and how the transformation from various kinds of books coalesced into genres with their own reputations and social meanings. He argues that the novel formed gradually out of other kinds of books, and that this process cannot be understood without examining the material books that people read in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
