The translator, James Rumford, explains his methods in the introduction. He studies several sources to inspire his choices in translating, especially those who translated from classical Roman texts to English. Interestingly, he had for inspiration a contemporary of Austen's, William Melmoth [c. 1710 -1799] who translated Pliny the Younger's letters in 1746.
