Hagstrum supports the idea that the 18th century saw the rise of individualism with a new stress on emotions and tenderness, particularly within the family. He finds evidence in art, music, and literature of the period to support this idea. He sees Milton as a precursor to Pope and Richardson, and finds the development of deep heterosexual friendships as part of this development. In this view, The Age of Reason is also an age of profound changes in our concept of emotion and love. Of course Jane Austen is one of the authors he deals with.
