The Most Disreputable Trade: Publishing teh Classics of English Poetry 1765-1810.
All aspects of the book trade are examined in this work on the history of the English poetry canon. In Glasgow in 1765, uniform pocket editions of English Poets were printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis, starting a tradition of literary products that continues today with series like Penguin Classics and Oxford World Classics. Bonnell explores how this phonemenon started and why it flourished over the next half century in the British press. How the books were manufactured, marketed, advertised, and consumed is examined, as well as how readers learned to be mass-market consumers. Counterwinds included copyright laws and printers who lamented the rise of cheap books. Johnson's Lives of the Poets hit a high-water-mark never again achieved. Very good condition.
