The author includes a fun introductory first chapter "Friends in Fiction" in which he discusses the happy thought that fictional characters might have met with other fictional characters, by different authors.  Our favorite epistolary parody is Catherine Morland's letter to Miss Eleanor Tilney, on her visit to Thornfield, where she is introduced to the morose Mr. Rochester and the governess, a strange girl with meagre body, whose position in the house is a mystery to poor Catherine. Some pencil marginalia in the introductory essay identifies sources for you - ie "in Waverly," "Mill on the Floss" and other such helpful comments.
