The Heir of Douglas.
SKU: 17310
Was Archibald Douglas really a son of Lady Jane Douglas and Colonel John Stewart, and therefore heir to the vast fortune of the Duke of Douglas? Or was he a fake? Pronounced an imposter, then the rightful heir, the case remains unresolved. The legal controversy involved almost everyone of note in 18th century England (Johnson and Boswell, Kings and peers), and was followed voraciously by the public, even resulting in a riot by the citizens of Edinbrough. De la Torre applies her deep knowledge of the 18th century to bring the drama to life, and offers her own conjecture as the solution to the mystery. Very clean first edition wtih a few tears to the dust jacket. Alfred A. Knopf. 1952. Hb, Dj. USED. $25.00
