In 1906, the London Times declared Frances Mary Richardson Currer [1785-1861] to be the greatest woman book collector. The claim was immediately contested. Being the greatest woman book collector was A Thing, and there were other ladies, American ladies too, who might deserve the honor. But Miss Currer had a lot of books. She inherited libraries in the Richardson and Currer estates and added to them. She lived near the Bronte family, and is thought to have been the inspiration for Charlotte Bronte's pen name Currer Bell. Her family sold off the library after her death.
